Sydney has several different kinds of rock night: a drink in a rock bar, local bands in a pub room, an emo club event or a touring act in a concert venue. This guide covers 20 current places to investigate, grouped by area so you can choose a programme and then plan around its address.
MoshPit, the Duke of Enmore and Dead Set make their rock identity explicit. Crowbar has heavy music concerts and a separate front bar. Enmore, Factory, Metro and Manning host rock and metal alongside other performances. The entries explain these differences rather than assuming that every night at every venue has the same music.
Newtown and Enmore account for several entries, but the list also includes Leichhardt, Marrickville, Rozelle, Darlinghurst, Moore Park, Dee Why and Penrith. MoshPit is a small rock and roll bar on King Street. Its official address is in Erskineville, a useful distinction when looking it up among Newtown venues. The bar describes a room decorated with music memorabilia and a regular live music programme.
The website separates the band nights from an open band night and an open mic. Those are different reasons to visit: choose a listed bill to see a particular band, or check the participation details if you want to play. MoshPit also publishes an adults-only policy, so do not assume an early performance allows accompanied children.
Botany View Hotel

The Botany View Hotel combines a pub and bistro with live bands at its King Street address. It is a useful additional programme to check when looking for a band night around Newtown. The venue has a broader live music calendar, so the individual lineup matters.

Marrickville Bowling Club

VLADS appears in the rock listings for 2 October 2026, while the Metro A.i.R programme lists Friends of Friends later in the month. These examples show why the event calendar is the useful starting point. They are not a promise that tickets remain available. 05Darlinghurst and Moore Park
Dead Set

Dead Set is a hard-rock bar in the Kinselas basement in Darlinghurst. The official address is on Bourke Street, but the venue directs visitors to enter from Little Oxford Street. That entrance detail is worth keeping with the address.

Spike Fuck is advertised for the main room on 2 October 2026, with the promoter describing a full-band show and a glam rock and roll direction. This is a concert choice to plan around a particular bill. The official FAQ describes a standing venue with limited accessible seating that can be requested in advance. 07Planning a Rock Night
Start with the programme rather than a fixed route between bars. A pub visit, a ticketed band room and a club event have different arrangements. Crowbar’s own visitor information, for example, separates its front bar from the concert venue. At Waywards, look for the upstairs room at the Bank Hotel. At Metro and Oxford Art Factory, the named room helps identify the correct performance.
Check age conditions for the exact event. MoshPit states that it is strictly 18+, including for children accompanied by an adult. Marrickville Bowling Club labels its ticketed shows as 18+. Liberty Hall says its age restrictions vary by event. These are individual venue rules, so they should not be treated as one policy for all Sydney gigs.

Accessibility also needs a venue and room check. Crowbar describes a level entrance from Parramatta Road to its bar, performance space and accessible bathrooms, and asks visitors to contact it ahead of a show about its viewing platform. Factory Theatre publishes different access information for its rooms. Liberty Hall asks visitors who need accessible seating to enquire early because the reserved provision is limited.

For tickets, follow the link on the venue’s own programme. Liberty Hall explicitly identifies Moshtix as its authorised seller. Other venues link to their own ticketing arrangements, which may differ by show. A listed event, an available ticket and a table reservation are separate things; check the relevant booking page before making the rest of your evening depend on it.
08History: Closed Sydney Venues
These two places belong to Sydney’s music history. Neither is part of the 20 current recommendations, and neither should be used as a destination for a night out.
Frankie’s Pizza: closed
Formerly 50 Hunter Street, Sydney. Frankie’s Pizza combined a rock bar, live music and pizza. Its former operator, Swillhouse, records its closure in late 2022. The venue still appears in older discussions of Sydney nightlife, so check the date of any recommendation that sends you there.

Trade Union Club: former venue
Formerly 111–113 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills. The City of Sydney’s history walk identifies the former Trade Union Club as a venue for independent rock music in the 1980s.
