01Introduction
For a rock or metal bar, start with The Cave, Excalibur or The Soundgarden. For a gig, look at the dated programmes at OCCII, Paradiso and Melkweg. Amsterdam also has smaller concert rooms and community spaces where punk and guitar music share the calendar with other styles.
A listening bar and a concert venue offer different evenings. Some places below serve drinks outside performances; others open for particular events. The neighbourhood sections give addresses and explain what kind of place each is, with links to check the current programme.

02Leidseplein & the Canal Belt
The Cave, Waterhole, Bourbon Street, Paradiso and Melkweg are around Leidseplein and the nearby canals. Maloe Melo and The Soundgarden are farther along the western canal edge; check the route between them rather than assuming one compact crawl.

The Soundgarden
Marnixstraat 164–166, 1016 TG Amsterdam · Jordaan / western canal edge
Alternative music café on the Marnixstraat with DJ nights and occasional bands. It is a bar option for rock and punk listeners, rather than a promise of a concert on every visit.

Paradiso

Concert and club venue with rock and alternative music within a broad programme. Paradiso also presents events at other Amsterdam venues, so check the location printed on your event page and ticket.

Melkweg

03The Spuistraat, De Wallen & Centrum
These central venues offer different music formats: a metal listening bar, a social space with punk events and a mixed-genre concert club.
Vrankrijk
Spuistraat 216, 1012 VT Amsterdam · Centrum / Spuistraat
Social and cultural space with punk nights, benefit concerts and other community events. Check the dated programme and read its safer-space policy before visiting; activities and entry arrangements vary.

Café Excalibur
Oudezijds Achterburgwal 48, 1012 DP Amsterdam · De Wallen
Hard rock and heavy metal café in De Wallen. The venue describes motorcycle-themed decor and pool tables; this is a listening-bar recommendation, not a claim of regular live concerts.
Sources: venue and programme; contact or supporting programme.
Bitterzoet
Spuistraat 2, 1012 TS Amsterdam · Centrum / near Centraal
Concert and club space with a varied music policy that includes rock, punk and ska alongside hip-hop, funk and soul. Consult the programme: the genre changes with each event.

04Oud-West, De Pijp & the DIY Circuit
Look at the programme before travelling to these smaller rooms. Live music, film, community activities and DJ nights can share the same space.
OCCII

Cinetol
Tolstraat 182, 1074 VM Amsterdam · De Pijp
Music venue with an adjoining bar and a programme spanning indie, rock and experimental music. Heavier music also appears: its listings include Liturgy, so the programme should not be described as excluding metal.
Sources: venue and programme; contact or supporting programme.
Checkpoint Charlie
Nassaukade 48, 1052 CM Amsterdam · Westerpark / Frederik Hendrikbuurt edge
Music café with DJs and semi-acoustic live performances, plus comedy. It is an alternative bar option for listeners who also enjoy garage and rock ’n’ roll, rather than a dedicated metal venue.

Tolhuistuin
IJpromenade 2, 1031 KT Amsterdam · Noord / Overhoeks

06History: Former Venues and Changed Identities
These entries describe former venues or former music programmes. They are not current rock-bar recommendations.
Club Mazzo
Rozengracht 114, Amsterdam · Jordaan · Historical
Former club at Rozengracht 114, open from 1980 to 2004. It combined music, nightlife and audiovisual art. This is a historical entry, not a place to plan a night out.
Sources: historical report; additional evidence.
Korsakoff
Lijnbaansgracht 161, 1016 VX Amsterdam · Jordaan · Historical
Former alternative club on the Lijnbaansgracht. Contemporary local reporting records its closure in August 2013. A surviving website gives conflicting dates, so its opening year is not stated here.
Sources: historical report; additional evidence; additional evidence.
Pacific Parc
Polonceaukade 23, 1014 DA Amsterdam · Westerpark / Westergas · Historical
The former Pacific Parc rock ’n’ roll programme belongs in the city’s music history. The address is now an operating restaurant and bar called Pacific, with its own club and cultural events, including Kino Pacific; it should not be described as an abandoned venue.

07Practical Tips
Planning a Night
Choose your concert first, then a bar nearby. Around Leidseplein, The Cave and The Waterhole are options to compare with a Paradiso or Melkweg ticket. For DIY gigs, compare OCCII, OT301, De Nieuwe Anita and Vondelbunker on the date you are visiting. In Noord, check whether your show is at Tolhuistuin, Skatecafé or Het Groene Veld before planning transport.
Tickets, Hours and Access
Use the official event link for prices, start times, age rules and any membership requirement. Check the venue's visitor information or contact it directly about step-free access and other access needs. A general opening-hours panel can conflict with special events, as it does at Maloe Melo.
Plan journeys with GVB or 9292, including your return trip. Check current fares and payment information there rather than relying on a fixed price in a guide.
