Heartbreaker

Its own site describes a bar with a pool table and pizza by the slice, and welcomes walk-ins. This is a bar-first choice for an evening centred on drinks and music. Do not plan it as a concert unless the venue advertises a particular performance. If you are comparing it with 170 Russell or Max Watt’s, decide first whether you want a band ticket or simply somewhere to spend time before or after another event.
The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar

The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar programmes rock, punk and metal shows on Victoria Street.
Its current ticket calendar distinguishes front-bar events from other shows and includes a Sunday Metal Matinee. That makes the actual listing more useful than a general description of the pub: confirm which performance you are attending and whether it needs a ticket. Town Hall Hotel

The official programme lists The Fiction with Moth on 26 September and Leatherman with Program on 3 October 2026. It also lists The Townies, so the calendar should be read by event rather than treated as a promise of one genre every night. Alongside the music, the pub advertises a beer garden and a food menu. The Curtin

The Curtin combines a pub and front-bar DJs with a live band programme in Carlton.
The checked listings include a Black Market Clash show, Kilat and Screamfeeder, alongside artists from other styles. 03Fitzroy, Collingwood and Abbotsford
This group brings together pub bandrooms, alternative shows and rock and roll bars. Johnston Street appears several times, but the venues are in different suburbs and at different numbers. Smith St Hotel is the current name at the former Gasometer site.
The Old Bar

The Old Bar hosts alternative bands and heavier shows on Johnston Street in Fitzroy.
Its programme includes Morbid Mondays and a Mirror Clippers launch with Mousse Cannon, Tarcutta and Comatose. The Workers Club

The Workers Club combines a Fitzroy pub with a bandroom for local and touring acts.
Its venue ticket page includes Hard & Homegrown with Rose Carleo Band and a Rock Night with No Apollogies in October 2026, alongside comedy and other styles. The bandroom and front bar are described separately on the official site, so a table booking should not be treated as a gig ticket. For access, the venue describes ramped entry from Gertrude Street and a bandroom and front bar on one level.

Punters Club

Punters Club is operating again as a live-music pub on Brunswick Street.
The venue’s current site explicitly announces its return and provides an active bookings page, food menu and music section. Its event page directs visitors to Facebook for the full programme. Include it when comparing Fitzroy pub gigs, but look at a dated listing before choosing a night: the pub’s name and older reputation are not a substitute for the current bill. This is the present business at 376 Brunswick Street, not a recommendation to visit a vanished venue.

The Tote

The current ticket outlet names those rooms separately and includes Faceless Burial, Aardvark, Involucro and Primeval Butcher on 3 October 2026. Nighthawks

Nighthawks is a Collingwood bar with live music, DJs and occasional heavy bills.
The venue’s own listing for 10 October 2026 describes a grind and death-metal show with Scattered Limbs, Hematemesis, Tongue Scum and Kniver. That is specific evidence for including it in a metal search, without suggesting the whole programme follows the same style. The wider calendar includes residencies and other bands. Compare the event descriptions, and make sure a ticket is for the performance you want when more than one listing appears on a date.

Smith St Hotel

Lulie Tavern

Lulie Tavern describes itself as a rock and roll bar, with a gig guide and a rooftop bar.
The current contact page places it at 225 Johnston Street in Abbotsford. The homepage explicitly says it no longer takes bookings for Old Lulie at 288 Johnston Street, so use the current address when arranging to meet someone. The Full Moon Fever rooftop is part of the same venue offering and is not counted separately here. Lulie is a bar option as well as a place to look for live music; follow its gig guide for the current bill.
04Brunswick, Northcote and Thornbury
The Sydney Road entries include pubs, the Bergy Bandroom and Brunswick Ballroom. Farther along the guide, the High Street addresses distinguish Northcote Social Club from the Thornbury venues. Compare the actual bills: a punk performance at Cafe Gummo and a concert at the Croxton are different plans.
Retreat Hotel

Retreat Hotel is a Brunswick pub whose live programme includes alternative rock alongside other styles.
The official archive describes Morningbirds as an alternative-rock trio and lists a July 2026 show, while other entries cover folk, bluegrass and pop. The current venue and contact pages remain active, but the accessible gig archive stopped at July during this check. Use it to understand the range of music, then confirm the next performance directly before travelling for a band. The pub is included as a current business, without presenting an old show as an upcoming one.

The general site gives the whole premises as 64–68 Sydney Road; bandroom tickets use number 68. These describe one venue complex, so they are counted together. Crystal Ballroom
Historical address: 125–129 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda.
The Crystal Ballroom was a punk and alternative music venue inside the Seaview Hotel, now known as the George.
State Library Victoria documents how the Seaview’s ballroom became a base for punk and alternative music. The St Kilda Historical Society gives the hotel address as 125–129 Fitzroy Street and records its closure in 1987, followed by later redevelopment. This entry describes that former music venue, not a current rock club or a claim that the building is empty. Its history helps explain St Kilda’s place in the scene, but it should not be added to a present-day gig itinerary.
