A key punk club that emerged in July 1977, located at the Crackers discotheque, 203 Wardour Street. It aimed to fill the void as The Roxy faced initial difficulties. Larger than The Roxy, with a more professional setup including a proper stage and sound system. However, it gained a reputation for violence.
Hosted early gigs by Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Slits, Adam and the Ants, Sham 69, Buzzcocks, The Fall, and The Adverts. The live album Live At The Vortex was recorded there, though its authenticity was questioned. The club is immortalized in The Jam's song "A-Bomb in Wardour Street". Operated for only about nine months, with its decline starting in late 1977 and final gigs in April 1978. Reasons included a change in management focus and failure to attract larger bands consistently under new promoters.
