This working men's club in Shepherd's Bush was the home turf of The Who. The band's relationship was symbiotic; the audience was composed largely of local Mods—the very demographic Pete Townshend was writing for.
The Who's residency (commencing June 7, 1963) allowed them to test the limits of volume and performance art. It was on this stage that Townshend's destructive auto-destructive art concepts began to manifest, fueled by the amphetamine energy of the Mod clientele. The Who were not just a London band—they were a Shepherd's Bush band. Now marked with a Blue Plaque.
