Founded by impresario Giorgio Gomelsky, The Crawdaddy Club in Richmond was the first venue to fully capitalize on the R&B explosion. Named after Bo Diddley's "Doing the Craw-Daddy," a staple of the Stones' set.
In February 1963, The Rolling Stones began a residency that would become legend. On April 14, 1963, The Beatles visited to watch the Stones—a summit that cemented the professional respect and rivalry between the two groups. When the Stones outgrew the venue, the residency was handed to The Yardbirds featuring a young Eric Clapton, ensuring its status as a guitar hero factory. Recently revived nearby.
