Originally the Popcorn Pub, The Coventry in Sunnyside is hallowed ground for rock historians. One of the few clubs in early 1970s that nurtured original bands rather than cover acts.
KISS played their first-ever shows here in 1973—one of the few places that allowed their full makeup and theatrical antics when Manhattan clubs turned them away. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons honed their act here. Also a second home for the New York Dolls, drawing massive Manhattan crowds. The Ramones (with Joey in his earlier band Sniper) were regulars. The Queens equivalent of Max's Kansas City. Building demolished but legacy recognized in 2024 with a mural/plaque at nearby Sanger Hall.
Glam rock. Original bands only.
